Digital Ripples

Popwarp, originally uploaded by nicoletbn.

In the past, I was part of an oekaki community. That's where I drew the pixel art bits I posted earlier. Every so often there'd be an image I loved, but it'd only be 300x200 pixels large, and I wanted something more wallpaper sized. Tiling looked terrible, and ruined the impact of the image, while stretching to fit or make larger made it look bloated and wrong. I started isolating my favorite parts, and pulling the ends out to reach the size of the frame I wanted to fill, which looked right to me.

I decided to try this on a photo. It turned out nice. It looks like pushing and pulling at time. I'd like to animate these ripples coming in and out of a photo, but I'll need to figure out a less tedious way of creating them...

The original photo I used is one of Ed's from his trip to Washington DC for the inauguration.

Seam, not scene. It's built into the newer photoshops, there's also some great open source implementations on all platforms, and a couple web-based apps for it. Good stuff.

Yah - i realized after posting the comment that I had misheard the name - some really nifty stuff in there, though.

Have you seen their follow up work for video? Some scary nifty stuff in there, the KGB would've been all over this shit 30 years ago.

That's scary as hell. Guess we can pretty much discount video evidence proving a lack of presence from here on out.

As far as I understand, seam carving looks fairly natural? Which isn't quite what I was going for here ;)

Looks fun to play with, tho.

Very nice! Given what you chose to stretch in this photo, I'm not sure I would have noticed it all if you didn't say what you did. As opposed to the photo of M on your flickr page where it is pretty obvious. Both are pretty cool!

pretty cool! I've had the similar problems with wannabe-wallpaper. This is a neat way of "fixing" them. Looks almost like it's underwater in parts.

Oh, wow, I am so bad at livejournal!

I'd love to take a few hours and convert it to vector, but lately my life has been SO busy!
